Life story
Sharifa Yousif Ahmed Mohammed Al-Tajir was born in Galali on 21 July 1971, the daughter of Yousif Ahmed Al-Tajir and Salma Sadiq Al-Tajir. She won a national Quran recitation competition as a teenager. In 1992 she married Waleed Tariq Al-Mahmeed. She studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and graduated in 1994 with honours. Moved by the struggle of Batool, a relative with sickle cell disease, she specialised in haematology. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, recovered after a year of chemotherapy, and now volunteers to raise awareness of early screening. Today she lives in Tubli.
