Life story
Ahmed Mohammed Hasan Ali Al-Tajir was born in Tubli on 14 March 1858 into the Al-Tajir family. As a boy he learned the Quran at the local kuttab. In 1881 he married Amina Saleh Al-Mannai. They had five children: Sayed, Kawthar, Mohammed, Batool and Mansoor. In 1885 he opened a small spice and rice stall in the Manama souq, the beginning of the Al-Tajir family business. He lost his savings when a cargo ship carrying his goods sank. Around 1905 he built the family's coral-stone house in old Manama, where four generations would later grow up. He died in Jidhafs on 9 September 1946, at the age of 88.
